Membrane Technology 2.5 HP

Membrane processes have established themselves as key separation processes in the Swedish water sector. The applications range from drinking water preparation from lake or river water, to seawater desalination at the Baltic Sea to in process water recycling and wastewater treatment with membrane bioreactors.  Highlights of membrane processes in the Swedish water sector are the Lackarebäck water treatment plant for drinking water preparation - one of the largest ultrafiltration plants in the world – and the Henriksdal wastewater treatment plant – one of the largest membrane bioreactors worldwide.

The course will provide the participants fundamental knowledge of membrane processes from an industrial perspective. Both the established pressure-driven processes such as microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration and reverse osmosis and the emerging membrane processes such as forward osmosis, electrodialysis, pervaporation and membrane contactors will be covered. Furthermore, membrane applications related to the water sector from process water recycling, drinking water preparation and wastewater treatment will be presented.  The knowledge provided with be further enhanced during laboratory classes and exercises.
