Entry requirements

This course is open for PhD students and for participants from the water sector.

Course examiner

Frank Lipnizki

Course aims

At the end of the course you should be able to:

  • Understand to mass transfer, membranes, modules and process designs related to industrial membrane processes
  • Demonstrate how membrane processes can be applied in the water sector.
  • Explain the different membrane separation processes used in the water sector.
  • Prepare a basic design of membrane process.
  • Describe challenges of membrane fouling and cleaning.

Course content

  • Fundamentals of membrane processes: Membrane, module, mass transport, fouling and cleaning, process design
  • Key membrane processes in the water sector: Microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, and reverse osmosis plus emerging membrane processes: forward osmosis, electrodialysis, pervaporation and membrane contactors.
  • Key membrane application areas in the water sector: direct membrane filtration and membrane bioreactors, drinking water preparation, storm and rain water harvesting and desalination.

Course activities

The course is designed as a 5-days intensive course with lectures (4 days), laboratory class and exercises (1 day).  The lectures will be given in a class room.

Examination

Grading scale: Fail/Pass
Assessment: Active participation during lecturers, laboratory class and exercises.  Compulsory participation in all course activities including lectures, laboratory and exercises.
